About Me

Hi there! I’m May, the chef and owner behind Ahmay’s. I was born in Burma and moved to the United States with my family when I was young, but the taste and aromas of Burmese cuisine have always stayed with me. My love for cooking started early on in our family kitchen, cooking with my mom and learning her ways. Dishes measured with “a little bit of this, and a little bit of that.” While watching Iron Chef, Morimoto with my dad inspired me to take the leap into culinary school, which led to a degree in Culinary Management from the Art Institute.

Afterwards, I worked my way through a series of fine dining restaurants, learning the ins and outs of kitchens and working the line. Ultimately finding myself at Morimoto’s Sushi Bar, learning more skills in a world that I’d always admired. But when COVID hit, I found myself cooking Burmese dishes almost every night over FaceTime with my mom and sister. The more I cooked our traditional recipes, the more a passion grew in me to bring them to the world.

Ahmay’s, which means “mom” in Burmese, began with friends who were willing taste-testers. In the summer of 2022, I walked into Palm Beach Meats, a place I’d heard might be open to a popup and asked to host a dinner there. I’ll never forget how they welcomed me, a stranger with a dream into their kitchen. Our first 5-course dinner sold out. With that starting success, we kept going, hosting popups and sharing Burmese dishes with more and more people.

Today, with our food truck, I get to bring Burmese flavors straight to you, from hearty curries to refreshing tea leaf salads, and I love every minute of it. I wish for Ahmay’s to be more than just a meal; I hope it to be a first & lasting introduction to the beauty of Burma - our dishes, our culture, and even the challenges our country faces.

So come by the truck, say Minglaba, and let’s share a little bit of Burma together. Whether you’re trying Burmese food for the first time or coming back for your favorites, I can’t wait to cook for you!
